Rihanna takes topless photo in religious pendant, accused of cultural appropriation

Feb 18, 2021

(CMR) Rihanna has been accused of cultural appropriation after sharing a topless photograph wearing a pendant that depicts the Hindu god Ganesha.

On Tuesday, the singer posted the picture of herself posing beside an outdoor pool wearing a pair of silk lilac shorts, the pendant, and a pair of drop earrings.

“When @popcaanmusic said “me nuh wan ya wear no lingerie tonight fa me girl”@savagexfenty [sic],” Rihanna, whose Savage X Fenty lingerie brand is now worth $1 billion, captioned the image.

However, the necklace, which features a diamond-studded ornamental impression of the elephant-headed deity, has been called into question by several persons.

Some Hindus described her outfit as ‘disrespectful” to their religion and called for her to remove the picture from her social media platforms.

“People need to start holding Rihanna accountable for her cultural appropriation cuz I’m tired,” one person said.

Another accused her of using a religious icon to promote something sexual.

In October 2020, Rihanna apologized to the Muslim community for using a song featuring sacred Islamic texts in her Savage X Fenty lingerie show.
